'God Of War Ragnarök' Release Date Revealed
Plus a list of all the video games I'm looking forward to for the rest of 2022.
Behold, a new video game trailer:
I’m mildly disappointed that the “Father and Son’ cinematic trailer for Good Of War: Ragnarök didn’t include the song by Cat Stevens. Granted, the mood wouldn’t be quite right. Kratos isn’t exactly showing up at folk festivals. But the lyrics stick the landing when it comes to the titular God of War’s relationship to his son, Atreus: “You’re still young, that’s your fault” seems like something he might growl, followed by, “Boy.”
Anyways, the sequel to 2018’s PS4 megahit God Of War, a reboot of the classic PlayStation series, is actually coming out in 2022. Many predicted and worried that Santa Monica Studio and Sony would delay the game into the following year, but it looks like this one is squeaking by just barely.
The release date: November 9th, 2022. (Pre-orders open at 10am local time on July 15th).
The game will be available on PS4 ($59.99) PS5 ($69.99) and will come with a variety of different editions, each more expensive and expansive than the last.
The Collector’s Edition looks pretty cool but it’s the Jötnar Edition that superfans with expendable cash will want. This comes with a set of dice (the dwarf Brok’s dice to be exact) a 16” replica of the hammer Mjölnir, 2” Vanir carvings, a cloth map, a ring and a bunch of other stuff including a 7” vinyl with two of the game’s tracks composed by the legendary Bear McCreary. And the game, of course.
You can watch an unboxing with Thor actor Ryuan Hurst and Santa Monica Studio Art Director Rafael Grassetti below:
You may recognize Hurst from his role as Opie from Sons of Anarchy in which he played one of the very few likeable characters in the entire damn soap opera (but damn I was addicted to that show for a while).
The Rest Of 2022’s Video Game Highlights
Other games I’m looking forward to in 2022, which really picks up in September.
Saints Row’s soft reboot — though I find almost all the marketing for the game to be utterly off-putting and cringe. (August 23rd)
The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum — Hey, at this point Tolkien’s universe has been squeezed for all it’s worth and then some. Why not a stealth game where you play as Smeagol and ring some filthy orcs’s necks? (September 1st)
The Last Of Us Part 1 — I admit, I think the ways they’ve altered the characters—especially Joel—is not great, but I’m curious to see how the overall feel of the game will be and I’m sure it’s going to be very pretty. (September 2nd)
Steelrising — A very cool Soulslike, or more like a Bloodborne-like, that I’ll have some preview stuff up for soon. (September 8th)
Metal: Hellsinger — Basically DOOM if it was a metal rhythm FPS. Literally shredding demons. Hell yeah. (September 15th)
Evil West — A third-person solo or co-op action game set in the Old West where you have to take down vampiric hordes and other monstrosities. I can dig it. (September 20th)
Marvel’s Midnight Suns — The upcoming game from XCOM dev Firaxis takes the turn-based tactical formula and blends it with superheroes and supervillains. Sounds super! (October 7th)
A Plague Tale: Requiem — I really enjoyed the first game and its story of the rat plague, the diabolical inquisition and the children who had to navigate these perils. Requiem looks like an excellent sequel. (October 18th)
Mario + Rabids Sparks of Hope — I thought the original Mario + Rabids was a really great XCOM-like and just a joy to play so I’m obviously excited for the next one. (October 20th)
Persona 5 Royal — One of the great JRPGs of recent years heads to a bunch of consoles that aren’t PS4 including PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. If you haven’t yet, you should really play this series. (October 21st)
Scorn — I’m not a huge horror movie or horror video game fan. I like horror stuff but it’s not my main squeeze. But damn . . . Scorn looks brilliant and terrifying.
Gotham Knights — I’m not convinced that this game will be all that good but I want it to be. A co-op superhero game set in the Batman1 universe but not starring Batman? Yeah, that sounds pretty fun—especially because you can still play solo if that’s your jam. (October 25th)
High On Life — A comedy FPS from Justin Roiland, the creator of Rick and Morty. It looks pretty wild. (October 25th)
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II — Not to be confused with Modern Warfare 2 or a remake of that game, this is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot. What can I say? I love playing Call Of Duty with my kids and friends so I’m totally stoked for this one and Warzone II. (October 27th)
I would add Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (Nov 18th) to this list but I’m just not that into Pokémon and never have been. Obsidian’s upcoming RPG Pentiment also sounds kind of cool. It’s a mystery game set in 16th century Bavaria that spans 25 years. The real murderer is never revealed; instead, the player must accuse who they either think did the deed or most deserves punishment. But this doesn’t have an actual release date beyond November yet, and it’s exactly the kind of game that gets booted into the following year.
What games are you most looking forward to this year (and beyond)? Let me know in the comments and thanks for reading and subscribing!
I originally stated this was part of the Arkham universe. It is not—which is strange! And really, it’s getting hard to keep track of all these sort-of-overlapping universes all the time.
I'm looking forward to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, a seemingly spiritual sequel to Nioh by the same team. It's next year but I'm quite interested. Didn't have time to play Nioh 2 yet either so there's also that.
I guess Elden Ring DLC is what I'm most looking forward to though. I've sunk unhealthy amounts of hours into ER so far and I'm still hungry for more. I hope they manage to maintain their usual DLC quality for this game, and foolishly I also hope for a 2022 release.
You got me too worked up over the Marvel game by mentioning X-Com. X-Com 2 on Ironman was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. It can't possibly live up to that.
