It's mostly a lot of people who think the show is either A) "woke" because it has black and brown-skinned people in it or B) not close enough to Tolkien's lore to be counted as truly Tolkien.
I don't care much for the lore. I read the books over 20 years ago and my memory of them have been overwritten by the Jackson movies. Personally, I found the first episode somewhat of a test of endurance. There's far too much exposition and dialogue, often between two parties. I get that they have to establish the lore, the people and the places but was a hard watch, especially with an unlikeable main character. Episode 2 fares a bit better in regards to pacing. So far I like Bronwyn and Arondir and the events around these two. I'm not going out of my way to schedule the next episode.
I went into this with an open mind. I could only get through Episode 1. Didn't even watch Episode 2. It was, except for the visuals, both boring and ridiculous. Galadriel was one-note, and there is no way that ROP's Elrond could ever have turned into the Peter Jackson character,(to say nothing of Tolkien's) no matter how many thousands of years he had to develop. Having seen the total misunderstanding of these two, I couldn't bear to stick around to see what else they butchered.
Haven't seen the show.
What is all the negative press about?
