Lynch mobs have always been a part of our culture.

The fact that these mobs don't pour hot tar on people or kill them does not make today's lynchers morally superior.

Tyranny of the majority is still tyranny.

And mobs violence always starts small - witness Krystalnacht (sp?).

Many of those denigrating non-vaccinatted are displaying their lack of a moral compass.

I would add that it happens on the other side, too, of course. In different ways and for different reasons. But there are altogether too many mobs running around these days.

Gloating seems stupid and counterproductive, but I'm certainly in favor of making being vaccinated or constantly tested against a deadly and contagious virus a job requirement. This isn't about people's own appetite for risk, this is about what you push on others as a result of your decisions.

Honestly, there's no way we could every pass seat-belt laws in this country nowadays...

Seatbelt laws are typically a state/local thing and I suspect we still could but I can also see how talking heads could conceivably make them a culture war issue. But insurance companies would hold a lot of sway in that convo and may in this one at some point.

Yes, I very much assume insurance companies will start treating being unvaccinated as a liability and increase premiums for this high risk category of people.

Me too. And this will continue to push the ball in the right direction (as much as I loathe the insurance companies they can be useful).

I don’t think the divide is political; I think the divide is between those who enjoy virtue signalling and those who hate being bullied.

There are more important things than living. And that’s saving this country for my children and my grandchildren and saving this country for all of us. I don’t want to die, nobody wants to die, but man we’ve got to take some risks and let unvaccinated health care workers possibly spread Covid to their patients. We’ve got to get back in the game and get this country back up and running.

I'm curious how you get "we need to get this country back up and running" from literally anything in this post. As it stands it seems you are only willing to engage with a straw man rather than actual arguments.

That's been my entire experience with this commenter, sadly. They're belligerent well past the point of reason for IRL conversations, much less internet comment sections, and seem more interested in trying to "dunk on" anyone who doesn't agree with the most extreme version of the mainstream than in having a discussion. They also seem very eager to try and paint you as a member of the alt-right an an anti-vaxer based on the fact that you don't fit neatly into a cookie-cutter copy of mainstream liberal dogma to the point where they just seem like they're trying to smear you.

I don’t like you. You continue to harass me. You lied about trans women “destroying” athletic records records of cisgendered women in an effort to justify your bigotry and desire to ban any trans people from participating in sport. I asked if you could prove that and you came up with one 40 year old trans woman who won a bike race. I do not respond to your comments. Every time you respond to mine I am going to retype this.

I wasn't even talking to you and you do not get to exercise some power of moderation in the comments. I fully admit to engaging in emotional hyperbole, but lies require malice. By pointedly and showily NOT responding to my comments (by responding to my comments), you are acting like a middle-schooler going "I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU!" while holding their finger several millimeters away from the target of their ire's skin. I very sincerely hope that you simply undergo some kind of emotional regression in comment sections and your child doesn't have to deal with your immature behavior.

I won’t even read what you wrote last the first sentence.

I get notified when you respond to my parent comment.

Oh yeah. I was feeling a little salty after reading the comment comparing liberals fed up with anti-vaxers prolonging the pandemic that has killed at least 1 in 500 Americans to lynch mobs. And not just any ol' lynch mobs but the Brown Shirts who started the Nazi pogroms against the Jews. What a gross comparison. It wasn't a bunch of democrats chanting "Jews will not replace us" and "blood and soil" in Charlottesburg.

Your last couple columns reminded me of TX Lt Gov Dan Patrick and his claim that old folks are willing to sacrifice their lives to Covid in order to keep the economy going. So, that was actually something that he said to Swanson Food fortune heir, noted anti-vax enthusiast and someone who recently moved his TV studio to his home to avoid people, Tucker Carlson, that I slightly bastardized.

"What I said when I was with you that night is there are more important things than living. And that's saving this country for my children and my grandchildren and saving this country for all of us," Patrick said. "I don't want to die, nobody wants to die, but man we've got to take some risks and get back in the game and get this country back up and running."

Here's where I am coming from. Getting vaccinated helps prevent infection. Getting vaccinated helps prevent transmission. For me, saying the state has no business mandating vaccines for healthcare workers because it is anti-those particular workers' freedom is akin to offering up old folks to Covid for the economy. Hence, the quote.

We know that eventually an unvaccinated healthcare worker will pass the virus on to someone they are caring for and that patient will die. How many patients are we willing to sacrifice for the freedom to infect?

For everyone against the mandate - do you want your unvaccinated 5 year old going thru cancer treatments to be taken care of by an unvaccinated nurse?

Do you want your vaccinated 75 year old mother in for a broken hip to be cared for by an unvaccinated nurse? Do you want your vaccinated 45 year old husband in for a heart attack to be cared for by an unvaccinated nurse?
