Sure it exercises the brain a little, but luck plays too much of a role to take it seriously, esp. since you're guessing with no clues/context. Plus there's been multiple words where 3-4 of the exact letters in the same spaces are shared by multiple words.
So, yeah, 'gaming' what should be a short, fun daily distraction doesn't seem fun.
I agree with the author. I play the game for fun and relaxation, I don’t want to be locked into”do it this way”. I change up my first word to make it fun, but with 2, 3, 4 vowels or often used consonants. Keep it fun! That’s what it’s about!

I am NOT using a different word everyday. “Sitar” will be the word of the day as soon as I do, and then I’ll be in a bad mood for the rest of my life.
Last week one of the words was “stair”. I groaned out loud.
I will never use the same word but I did take a train recently, in Spain, and it was kind of romantic and exciting.
