I’m currently watching Midnight Mass and it was so obvious a younger person was playing an older role that I immediately looked up the casting and I was correct. There is always something “off” in the eyes…..
So, I agree with you. Let the young play the young and the older play the older.
A rare example of it working for me is This Is Us. They leap forwards and backwards decades every episode.
IMO, a big factor in its success is when a character is being made older or younger that tends to be their look for the whole episode. They don't jump backwards and forwards giving you a constant comparison.
They also mix it up and clearly make decisions based on on how plausible a particular actor looks older or younger. Notably, many of the side characters are recast at their different ages and characters who are first introduced as old are always recast when showing their younger selves.
There seems to be a real methodology to it, and this mix of ageing and de ageing and recasting seems to blend everything together extremely well. So maybe that's the answer, it's not that one way is right or wrong, it's that a meticulous mixture of the two works best.
