I had the thought today that wouldn’t it be funny if he bought Twitter then just shut it down.

Personally I just can’t get on with it and deleted my account, same with Facebook. I realised how much time they sapped and how little value they were giving me.

They're definitely time sinks.

Right on the money there. I use Twitter to keep up with news and also to get differing view points on issues I care about. But I accomplish both of these on a 'read only' basis. I learned over the years that engaging even with the most innocuous seeming comment inevitably invites conflict. It seems a lot of users want to put people on one team or the other. Red or blue, us or them, good or bad. I think most of us are somewhere in the middle on most issues but there's no room there anymore. If you listen to Rogan you're a right wing, conspiracy theory loving covid denier. If you are pro-choice you're a left wing commie baby killer. I think this division is the biggest threat to our way of life and the divide is getting wider every day.

I agree. I think sober minds need to prevail somehow. We don't have to agree on everything but the demonization of everyone is a real threat to our future.

No way I'm leaving Twitter unless it truly dies. It's the only social media site I can stand other than Reddit, and Reddit doesn't provide the same type of engagement, but is much more an informational site in my view.

I pretty much agreed with every line you wrote. The loudest mouths are the least likely to leave Twitter when they realize their replacement dopamine pusher isn't getting them the purest flake. I saw a very interesting thread on Twitter today that might have captured what Elon is actually trying to do right now: https://twitter.com/oliverbcampbell/status/1593434329153245185

He was a big part of Gamergate. His streams are my fav during that era, because it is mainly left-leaning part of it, and less angry discourse. Now, none of those streams can be found in those channel. I think he may want to distance himself, and block game jounalism entirely or not. I don' t know I don' t use Twitter. I haven' t followed up on Gamergate for seven years. I' m just try to catch up into it, after more allegations against male developers and artists got debunked. Yet Gamergate are still considered harasser and Zoey Quin is consider a victim.

That's odd.

Yeah I mean, I like Twitter for some things also. I just think it has the tendency to bring out the worst in people and it's a terrible place to get in an argument. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

I like Twitter.

Not because I am a sociopath, but because people who are better educated or cleverer than I comment there.

One quick example: Boris Ryvkin quotes Sir Geoffrey Howe, on economists: "An economist is somebody who knows 364 ways to make love, but doesn't know any women.”

Can I live without twitter?

Of course I can, but that quip brought a smile to my face.

So I hope that Twitter survives and that Musk makes it a bastion of free speech - where everyone can post - even the AH's that I disagree with.

I'm not sure I love Elon's latest approach to this, with the whole shadowbanning stuff he's talking about doing. That's a terrific quotation!

Yeah, that would be one of the mistakes he's already making. Perhaps he'll backtrack. Just have to wait and see.

I used to enjoy Twitter, because it was structured so much differently, especially in comparison to Facebook, however, that being said, I haven’t had a Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or the like years. I gotta say...I enjoy not having them.
