Listen To Journey's Gorgeous Soundtrack Reimagined As 'Traveler'
Austin Wintory has completely reimagined the game's breathtaking score and recorded the new orchestral version with the London Symphony Orchestra.
In the latest episode of the diabolical podcast1 I talk with Austin Wintory, the composer of one of my favorite video game soundtracks and games, Journey. (We only talk a little bit about Elden Ring, I promise!)
Mostly we talk about Wintory’s career, the games industry and his exciting new project.
For the game’s 10th anniversary, Wintory self-financed and produced an entirely new version of the original score.
The reimagined version is called Traveler and was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. I write about all of that over at Forbes.
Here’s the video version of the podcast if you’d like to watch:
Austin is a very easy guy to interview/podcast with because he’s very good at talking about all the things he’s passionate about. He’s very eloquent and articulate and interesting and the hour and twenty minutes (or so) went by fast (I thought we might talk for half an hour but I was mistaken!)
You can listen to Traveler on Bandcamp, where it’s also available for purchase for just $7. It’s really, really damn impressive. The original is so beautiful and I won’t say that one is better than the other, but Wintory has certainly accomplished what he set out to do: Make something old feel new again.
Journey is also on sale to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a 50% off discount on Steam and the PlayStation Store. Even if you’re not a gamer, you should play this game. And listen to both the original soundtrack and Traveler.
I’ve totally dropped the ball on the podcast, I know. And I am sorry, and I am trying to revive it. The past year has been a bit soul-crushing, to say the least, and I am trying to claw my way out of a deep pit of depression. I can’t speak to how often I’ll be releasing new episodes but new episodes are coming. Thank you for sticking with me, my droogies!
