I remember the first series being excellent. Must catch up on the other two. I grew up in West Yorkshire and lived in Leeds, it’s not all that grim :D

Mind you I moved to New Zealand in 2005 :)

Over and over and I really like the use Happy Valley makes of some familiar faces

I agree that Happy valley is one of the very best out there. Coming to it late, you're being reminded of shows that followed it, which somewhat lessens the impact when it came out and was so groundbreaking. Kate Winslet's Mare wishes she were Catherine Cawood. I'm so impressed that Sarah Lancashire could excel in front of and behind the camera. And Tommy Lee Royce is a truly terrifying character - I can't watch the actor in anything else. When you watch Acorn and Brit ox regularly you see the same actors

Thanks for the review, I will certainly give it a watch. I've noticed British shows tend to cast normal-looking people, which helps immerse me into a show (The original Fargo also did a good job with this, I think, despite some a-listers in there). You probably have already seen/heard of these but Denmark in the 2010's produced a couple of really good female-led or co-led detective shows (Forbrydelsen and Broen). They made American versions of them but I don't know if they were any good.
