Ten years of development hell and we finally have a trailer and a February 18th, 2022 release date for the Tom Holland / Mark Wahlberg led Uncharted film. Here’s the trailer:
This looks . . . pretty bad honestly. Not just generic—Uncharted games are basically Indiana Jones knock-offs but at least they have some style—but cheap in a way I find surprising. Or maybe not surprising.
Wahlberg is a terrible casting choice for Sully. Maybe Wahlberg with a mustache but this? He could be Nathan Drake’s dad, or—in one scene—his older gay lover.
The movie also stars Antonio Banderas, presumably as the villain (is it weird to have a couple of white male heroes taking on a Latin dude in this day and age or am I overthinking things?) along with Tati Gabrielle as Braddock and Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer.
There’s one scene I enjoyed, which is basically the live-action version of the plane segment from Uncharted 3. We even get an “Oh crap!” from Holland’s Drake. (Holland’s Drake sounds like a bar or an antiquities shop or something).
But overall this feels like a much-less-good version of the games, blending elements from all four into what is ostensibly a prequel, but one that retcons canon from the games for no particular reason. I hope there is lots and lots and lots of climbing. The real question, however, is whether Mark and Tom will have aim-assist turned on.
I’ll have more thoughts on this at my blog at Forbes soon. What did you think of the trailer?

RE: Antonio Banderas:
Part of the idea of racial equality should be that anyone can be a hero OR a villain- if all races are fundamentally human and brothers, that means we can all be good or bad. If this was a movie with two Latin heroes against a white villain, it would probably go over completely without notice to you.
Now, it could be quite possible that the film ends up portraying Banderas's character as some grossly offensive stereotype of a Hispanic man on the level of a 60's Western, but I doubt that will be the case (although I have no doubt there will be SOMEONE on social media who whines about it, because someone whines on social media about everything under the sun.)
