One of my favorite writers and former co-blogger at my old politics site The League of Ordinary Gentlemen, Freddie deBoer, has started his own Substack and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll subscribe.
Freddie is a damn fine writer. He can turn a phrase like nobody’s business. I often read Freddie and think to myself “I wish I was this good at this shit.”
While he often writes about politics from a leftist/Marxist viewpoint, he’s not beholden to any particular group, and is often at odds with folk on his “side” which I enjoy primarily because I think that keeps people honest. When all you can do is rattle off talking points or hew rigidly to the party line, well, why even bother?
I recently listened to Freddie on the Blocked and Reported podcast with Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal (Jesse also has a Substack you should consider subscribing to!) and I remember thinking at the time—which was around the time I was starting diabolical—that Freddie would make a good fit at Substack. Then lo and behold it’s like I’m a damn psychic!
In any case, check out Freddie’s brand new Substack here. He’s got a lot of interesting things to say and a way with words. Not a terrible combination.
It’s a brave new world for independent journalists and columnists, and one that is both exciting and a little daunting. I hope it works out for Freddie—hell, I hope it works out for me as well. The promise and allure of truly independent writing supported by readers instead of corporate media is definitely the dream made real.
Thanks again to you all for being such diabolically wonderful readers. And damn good looking, too. Shout out in the comments with anything you’d like to see discussed more of in this space. Peace!
P.S. I am going to create a “premium” subscription option here at diabolical soon as well. I still hope to keep much of this content outside of that, but the more subscribers I can muster here the more I can focus on this newsletter and the wide-ranging topics I hope to cover. I am always beyond grateful for all of your support.
Thanks for the recommendation 👍🏽
great rec! thanks.
